Breed of the Month

We have one of these staying with us at the moment such a beautiful friendly Giant breed that we thought it would be nice to know a bit about their History.

The Leonberger is a Giant Dog Breed. The Breeds name derives from the city of Leonberg in Beden-Wuttemberg, Germany. According to legend, the Leonberger was ostensibly bred as a "symbolic dog " that would mimic the Lion in the town crest. It is in the working group for dog shows such as Crufts.

This mountain dog occurs with a gentle double coat, The Leonberger is a large, muscular and elegant dog. The face is adorned with a dramatic back muzzle and face. They are a surprisingly agile and well coordinated breed which work well as both a family pet to a search and rescue dog.

They are a loyal, kind and gentle dog but like most Giant Breeds their life span is not as long as the smaller breeds. They would average from 8 to 10 years. Males weigh anything from 54 to 77Kg and females weigh from 45 to 61Kg.
